Smith & Nephew Bactigras 100 x 400mm — Antiseptic Paraffin Gauze (1 Unit)

Smith & Nephew Bactigras 100 x 400mm is a sterile antiseptic paraffin gauze dressing impregnated with chlorhexidine acetate for effective infection control and atraumatic dressing changes. Designed for burns, skin graft donor sites and contaminated wounds, this non-adherent wound dressing provides sustained antimicrobial activity while maintaining a moist wound environment to support healing.

Key Benefits

  • Antimicrobial protection: contains chlorhexidine acetate to reduce surface bioburden and help prevent wound infection.
  • Non-adherent, atraumatic removal: paraffin base helps prevent dressing sticking to the wound, minimising pain and tissue damage on change.
  • Maintains moist wound environment: supports optimal healing conditions for burns, grafts and partial-thickness wounds.
  • Versatile clinical use: suitable for burns care, donor sites, skin grafts, and contaminated or exuding wounds.
  • Sterile single unit: 100 x 400mm size provides good coverage and can be trimmed to fit wounds.
Ingredients and Materials

Bactigras is a sterile paraffin gauze dressing impregnated with chlorhexidine acetate (antiseptic). The dressing consists of cotton gauze saturated with a soft paraffin and liquid paraffin base that contains chlorhexidine acetate (commonly reported at 0.5% concentration in the impregnating solution). Manufactured by Smith & Nephew to medical device standards for surgical and wound care dressings.

How to Use
  1. Prepare the wound: clean and debride according to clinical protocols and apply any required topical agents.
  2. Open the sterile pack, handle the dressing using aseptic technique, and cut to size if necessary.
  3. Place the Bactigras dressing with the impregnated paraffin gauze in direct contact with the wound surface.
  4. Cover with an appropriate secondary dressing (absorbent pad and fixation) to secure and manage exudate.
  5. Change frequency: follow clinical guidance—commonly daily or as directed by a clinician based on wound condition and exudate level.
Who It’s For

Intended for clinicians and healthcare providers in hospital, clinic and community settings. Suitable for burn patients, skin graft donor sites, surgical wounds and contaminated or exuding wounds where antiseptic and non-adherent properties are required. May also be used in supervised home-care when recommended by a healthcare professional.

Caution & Storage

Caution: For external use only. Do not use if allergic to chlorhexidine, paraffin, or dressing components. Avoid use on patients with known sensitivity to chlorhexidine or with deep dry wounds where paraffin may be inappropriate. Use with caution on heavily exuding wounds—ensure appropriate secondary absorption. If signs of infection or allergic reaction occur, discontinue use and consult a healthcare professional.

Storage: Store in original packaging in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Do not use if the sterile packaging is damaged. Dispose of after single use.
