1. Confirm the patient is unconscious and has no gag reflex — oropharyngeal airways are contraindicated in conscious patients with an intact gag reflex.
2. Select correct size: measure from the corner of the mouth to the angle of the mandible (or earlobe) to confirm Size 2 is appropriate.
3. Open the mouth using a jaw-thrust or chin-lift as needed. Insert the airway following the natural curvature of the tongue.
4. Advance until the flange rests against the lips. For some patients, a 180° rotation technique (insert with tip upward, then rotate) can reduce tongue displacement — use the method trained for in your protocol.
5. Confirm patency by observing chest rise with ventilation and listening for breath sounds. Secure and monitor continuously.
6. Dispose after single use according to local biohazard regulations.
