1. Wash hands and prepare needed transport medium or tube if required.
2. Ask the patient to tilt head back and open mouth wide. Depress the tongue gently with a tongue depressor if needed.
3. Without touching the tongue, cheeks or teeth, insert the swab and rub the posterior pharynx and tonsillar areas firmly for several seconds to collect cells and secretions.
4. Rotate the swab while withdrawing and place immediately into the appropriate transport medium or a sterile container per your laboratory protocol.
5. Label the sample (these swabs are unlabelled), seal, and send to the laboratory following your institution’s chain-of-custody and transport guidelines.
6. Dispose of the used swab as clinical waste. Do not reuse.
